The hedge will provide shelter from the wind and the rain for birds and small mammals, and shelter from predators too. The dead hedge also forms a linear eco-pile that provides a great home for insects and other important creepy crawlies. 
So it was very exciting to see this whole in a pile of brambles we cleared in December. It looks like somebody had made a little shelter den here.
